If faced with a serious accident, check that it's safe to approach. Don't move any person more than necessary for treatment, unless life-threatening danger (e.g. fire). To determine condition of patient ask; !i! "what happened?" !n!. The reply will help you know what to look for. It also confirms they are conscious, {airway} is clear & they are able to {breathe}.
If no reply, immediately check {breathing}. Do not move patient unless in life threatening danger. Check that the chest rises & falls. Listen for patient's breathing by placing your ear next to the patient's nose & mouth. Call for help, but don't leave patient if possible watch for any changes in condition
If patient is {bleeding}, quickly press down with hands on bleeding wound (ideally, put clean cloth or equivalent over wound before pressing, but don't waste time searching). Keep on pressure until wound stops bleeding. Never remove an object which has caused a puncture wound (e.g. glass).
